SUNG IN ITALIAN However, Rossini, armed with a chest of musical delights not yet used, recycled some of his old opera themes and created what we now know today as the Overture to The Barber of Seville. Therefore, similarly to that of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro Overture, Rossini’s new opener bears absolutely no musical resemblance to that of any of the opera’s music. The skillful hands of the barber were set more exclusively to the fields of hair, skin, and scalp care, and the modern barbering profession grew towards what we recognize today. We know from Rossini’s opera that Figaro does more than just trim hair and style wigs for the other characters in The Barber of Seville.

I am in love with Alan Titus as Figaro--he is the quintessential Barber of Seville--handsome, a bit cocky, great at scheming and loveable. Beverly Sills is adorable as Rosina. You'll really want her to triumph.

This is my favorite recording of The Barber, partly out of nostalgia, but mostly because it remains true to what I loved about the performance: Beautifully voiced Rossini singers with marvelous sense of farce and delicious grasp of character. Fun! Varviso does a great job, bouyant and full of life.
